More sounds of wind

It is difficult to record the sound of wind. You’ll know this if your mobile phone videos have been ruined by harsh buffering, even in what feels like the slightest of breeze. It has taken us years to develop effective baffle techniques for our kit. This means our very sensitive mics can record and cope with quite strong wind. We’re always proud of an episode where wind is a feature.

There’s something comforting about listening to the wind from the safety of a still day. Something about hearing how it moves in gusts. Something about how it blusters and fills the space. Something about how it makes you aware of the space, the air, the leaves.

So, here a second dose of our wind episodes. The first collection from the early days is here – the sound of wind.

Storm Kathleen

This is the sound of Storm Kathleen from inside a hotel in Plymouth. The wind howls and whistles outside.

Listen to episode 214 – Storm over hotel peninsula (39 minutes)

Winter wind in tall trees

Let the big sound of the wind in the winter trees, take you away. This is a *sleep safe* episode recorded in December.

Listen to episode 202 – Upland woods in winter gales (61 minutes)

Wind in the belfry

The church clock in Rye strikes 3am. As the sound of the bell fades, share some time with the wind as it rattles the door to the clock tower and flaps the ropes on the flag pole.

Listen to episode 200 – Windswept night in the belfry (60 minutes)

Wind in the bird hide

The sound from an inside-outside space on a sunny, warm late afternoon at the end of the summer. Sit on one of the wooden benches. Listen to the wind as it finds its way in through the gaps.

Listen to episode 194 – Inside a bird hide (36 minutes)

Wind in a fir forest

We’d been searching for this sound for a while. Listen with headphones for the full gorgeous effect of the wind in the fir trees in this remote place. This is a *sleep safe* episode.

Listen to episode 183 – Upland fir forest (38 minutes)

Storm Eunice

At the top of the old Victorian house are several flights of dim, dark stairs. Steep. Narrow. Cold. They lead up to a pair of rarely used attic rooms. The wind rumbles in the chimneys, the gusts moaning through the tiles and rafters.

Listen to episode 139 – Old rafters brewing storm (35 minutes)

Essex spring

A gentle breeze through dry reeds against a backdrop of skylarks and spring on the Dengie Peninsula, Essex.

Listen to episode 116 – Sissing plantations in open country (25 minutes)

Durdle Door

Bitingly cold, we sheltered against the cliff to watch the waves hitting the famous rock formation. There were people on the beach but the wind took away their voices.

Listen to episode 114 – Crashing waves at Durdle Door (31 minutes)

December wild

A barn. Alone on steeply sloping fields in Derbyshire on a wild December night. This is a *sleep safe* episode.

Episode 147 – The barn high up the moor (38 minutes)
