Radio Lento is 4!

We launched Radio Lento on 29 March 2020, just a few weeks into lockdown. It feels like a long time ago. We didn’t think we’d still be going four years later.

We have just shared our 213th episode and have totted up that this means we have shared 141 hours of sound so far. We’ve recorded in 24 counties and have plans to make it at least 25 this year.

To mark this anniversary, this week’s episode is one sharing some of our favourites. It was hard to choose as we love them all. Episode 213 – Soundscenes we love from four years of Lento.

Here’s a link to each one so you can listen to the whole thing.

Forest of Dean

There’s a rich soundscape of birds including an owl and the strange call of a woodcock in this episode. The volume and type of song changes over the episode. We’d never heard of a woodcock before this episode. It is the funny wah-wah-waaah sound that pops up now and again.

Listen to episode 17 – Cathedral of Trees (43 minutes)

Felixstowe Ferry

A warm Suffolk beach in the August sunshine. It is the end of the day and it is still hot. Children are crabbing on the jetty. Small boats chug past. Fragments of shingle tinkle like bright pieces of metal.

Listen to episode 25 – Cooling off beside sifting waves at Felixstowe Ferry (32 minutes)

Inside wind

At the top of the old Victorian house are several flights of dim, dark stairs. Steep. Narrow. Cold. They lead up to a pair of rarely used attic rooms. Here you can listen to the wind rumbling in the chimneys, the gusts moaning through the tiles and rafters.

Listen to episode 139 – Old rafters brewing storm (35 minutes)

Persistent rain

In the garden under tarpaulin, persistent heavy rain splatters everything. This is probably the most uncluttered rain episode we have. Listen on repeat!

Episode 128 – Persistent rain (51 minutes) *sleep safe*

Nature rich

The North Kent Marshes feel like a remote and precious spot. From the footpath, less than a mile from the water of the Thames Estuary, listen out for lapwings, marsh frogs, skylarks and more, all with the backdrop of sheep in the distance. On the most glorious of May days.

Episode 169 – Ear witness report from the Hoo Peninsula (47 minutes)

The sea at night

On the coastal path from St Abbs in Scotland to the most perfect beach. A bench looking out to the rocks and the water.

Listen to episode 134 – Night waves rolling onto Coldingham Sands (34 minutes) – sleep safe episode
